Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The family was also dominated by her maternal grandmother, and was raised being an all-single child. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. In addition to working two part-time jobs, Scott was also a teacher in Temple University. She planned on becoming an instructor of English in a secondary institution. She was unable to fulfill the dream after studying for three years and working as a teaching assistant, she quit college. She started her career doing live performances of poems as well as the work of her own. Then she joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. She was first outed as an artiste at a Roots Show. After that, she got collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She also gained knowledge of the stage when she appeared in the Canada tour of the Broadway the musical Rent. She signed as the label's first artist.
